Liverpool Handed Significant Injury Boost As Two Players Make Training Return

Liverpool defender Joel Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri both took part in training on Tuesday night ahead of the Reds’ clash against Tottenham this weekend.

Neither player took a full part in the session but they have now stepped up their recoveries to the point where they are able to participate in some ball work.

Matip has not been seen since aggravating a knee injury in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United in October, while Shaqiri has been struggling with a thigh injury that has kept him out since the Club World Cup in Qatar.

It would be a surprise if either player started versus Spurs, but you would think that Shaqiri, at least, will be contention for a place on the bench.

Matip may well need some more time to build up his match sharpness but the Cameroon international’s return will a big boost for manager Jurgen Klopp, who currently has just two fit centre-halves.
