Liverpool Handed Major Injury Boost Ahead Of Chelsea Fixture With Key Player Set To Return

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is back in training ahead of this Sunday’s game against Chelsea.

The 25-year-old had to be substituted at half-time against Crystal Palace just before the international break.

Mac Allister also didn’t feature when Argentina faced Venezuela on Thursday evening but he is expected to be involved when the World Champions take on their next opponents tomorrow.

The midfielder is set to be in the matchday squad when his country take on Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier at home.

What injury has kept Mac Allister on the sidelines?

The Argentinian international strained his right adductor muscle against Palace. It is the same problem he picked up last month.

Despite the fitness issues, though, it does appear as if Mac Allister will continue his record of starting every league fixture when the Reds face Chelsea this weekend. Of course, he will need to come through the Bolivia match unscathed but it is positive news for head coach Arne Slot.

Do Liverpool have any other injury concerns?

Caoimhin Kelleher will also return to the squad, having fully recovered from the virus that sidelined home for the 1-0 win over Palace. He played for Ireland in their two Nations League games against Finland and Greece.

There is less certainty about the availability of Federico Chiesa. The winger has not featured in the Reds’ last two matches against Bologna and the Eagles. Slot said the Italian shouldn’t be out for too long which suggests a comeback after the international break is very likely.

Harvey Elliott is ruled out until the end of October with a broken metatarsal, while Alisson Becker is unavailable due to a hamstring injury. It has been confirmed that the Brazilian will not play again until after the next international break in November.
