Liverpool Lead Manchester United In January Race To Sign Hazard

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach winger Thorgan Hazard in the January transfer window, according to reports in Germany.

The brother of Chelsea star, Eden, the Gladbach midfielder reportedly has a release clause of €30m (£26m) which the Reds will look to trigger.

Manchester United are also reportedly interested in Hazard but Liverpool are believed to be leading the race for the Belgian international.

The 25-year-old has been in superb form so far this season, having scored 11 goals and contributed seven assists in 16 games. He is equally comfortable playing on either wing, demonstrated by the fact that eight of his appearances have been from the left-hand side while the other eight have been on the right.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has struggled for alternatives in wide areas with Xherdan Shaqiri having being used in a number 10 role since his arrival from Stoke in the summer. Hazard could be an ideal replacement for the likes of Sadio Mane or Mo Salah if either player was to pick up an injury.

The Belgian was sold to Gladbach by Chelsea for £8m in 2015 after a season-long loan spell in Germany. The Blues reportedly have first-option to buy back the player, and it remains to be seen if they’ll get involved in the transfer battle.
