Liverpool Lose Another Top Centre-Back But Lallana Suggests Another Option

Jurgen Klopp made a number of changes to his line-up last night to face Danish Champions FC Midtjylland but he still ended up suffering another key loss from the defence.

The boss gave starts to Jota, Origi and Minamino as part of a front three and rested the big 3 of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. However the Reds did finish the game with their first choice front 3 and needed Salah to score a 93rd minute penalty to seal the game after Jota had put them ahead on 55 minutes.

The worst news from the game saw Fabinho need to be taken off after 30 minutes with a suspected hamstring problem which will need to be confirmed by a scan today. Rhys Williams came on to replace the Brazilian and helped Liverpool to keep a clean sheet.

After learning of the team’s latest injury former Red Adam Lallana provided another solution to the central defensive issues facing Liverpool as reported in the Liverpool Echo.

England international Lallana now playing at Brighton had the following to say of his old team-mates,

“He’s the best defender in the world, but the characters they’ve got in the group, they’ll all know they’ve got to give that little bit more,”

“They’ve definitely got the ability to perform at the highest level and still win silverware even without the sensational Virgil van Dijk.

“Joel Matip’s back fit too. Even Jordan Henderson played centre-half in the World Club Cup last year and did alright!”

So with the performances of Rhys Williams alongside Joe Gomez the game vs West Ham may well see those two renew their partnership in defence and with Henderson capable of deputising as a centre-back Liverpool should be able to make do until Joel Matip and Fabinho return to fitness.
