BBC pundit Alan Shearer expects Andoni Iraola to “implement his style of football pretty quickly” after taking the Liverpool manager’s job.

Speaking to The Liverpool Offside about the appointment of the Basque, Shearer said Iraola deserves the opportunity to show what he can do with the Reds:

“First and foremost, he’s done an unbelievable job at Bournemouth. When you consider the turnover of players, particularly last season where they sold four or five for an absolute fortune and had to replace them, for him to field and shape the team as he did and then to get better?”

“I hate being disrespectful to other clubs, but he deserves a chance now at a bigger club. I mean, it’s one thing managing at Bournemouth, but it’s another thing managing one of, if not the biggest, clubs in the world in Liverpool. So it’s a huge step up for him, but I think he deserves a big chance and I think he’ll try and implement his style of football pretty quickly.”

Iraola‘s style of play revolves around high pressing and chaos in the final third of the pitch, which is pretty reminiscent of Jurgen Klopp.

Of course, there are concerns about his CV. He has never won a league title, which is something that Klopp, and Arne Slot for that matter, had done before they arrived on Merseyside.

Iraola still has to show that his methods can work at a high-profile team, who will be facing opponents with low blocks week in, week out.

The Athletic have revealed that Iraola was in the mix to take over at Stamford Bridge prior to Xabi Alonso’s appointment.

It is believed the key factor behind why the former Bournemouth manager didn’t get the job was due to his style of football – the very reason he was given the opportunity by the Reds.
