Liverpool have been dealt a setback in their attempts to appoint Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, according to the Gazzetta Dello Sport.
The Italian newspaper says that the Italian is “aware” that a number of “big European clubs” are interested in hiring him this summer.
It was reported at the end of February that the Reds, Chelsea and Manchester United were all keeping tabs on Inzaghi’s situation.
His current deal at Inter is set to expire at the end of next season and Gazzetta claims “Liverpool above all” have been considering making an offer for his services.
Inter are lining up a new contract
To head off potential interest, his current team are keen to offer him an extension so he remains at the San Siro until the summer of 2027.
Inzaghi has been happy to agree to a one-year rolling contract up until now but Inter want to tie down the 47-year-old for the long term and end any speculation about his future.
Why would Liverpool be interested in Inzaghi?
After reaching the Champions League final last year, the Nerazzurri have actually kicked on this season, having run away at the top of the Serie A table. Inzaghi’s team have won 24 of their 29 games (an 83% win ratio), having lost just once.
It should be noted, though, that Liverpool’s interest in the Italian manager has only been reported in his homeland. According to rumours in England, Inzaghi is not considered to be in the top three candidates.
Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano says the club have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso as their top target, with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi seen as the two backup options.
