Chelsea have made an approach for Xabi Alonso, according to journalist Alex Crook.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Crook said that the Blues have decided to see whether the Spaniard would be interested in becoming their manager, with it now looking unlikely that he will take the Liverpool job:

“We’ve been told that Chelsea reached out yesterday to the agent of Xabi Alonso. It seems like [Arne] Slot will stay at Liverpool, so Chelsea might see an opening here with Alonso.”

Unsurprisingly, supporters on X are not particularly happy, with some slamming the Reds for keeping Slot, while others don’t believe Alonso would take the position at Stamford Bridge anyway:

Liverpool have not contacted Alonso

It was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano at the weekend that the Merseyside club have not held any recent talks with the Spaniard or his agent.

Alonso was under consideration to be Jürgen Klopp’s replacement, but he reportedly turned down the opportunity to stay with Bayer Leverkusen.

What are the odds of Chelsea appointing him?

The bookies have shortened their prices on Alonso becoming the Blues’ next permanent head coach. The odds are now between 5/1 and 10/1.

However, at the moment, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, ex-Flamengo coach Filipe Luis, Como’s Cesc Fabregas and Fulham’s Marco Silva are still deemed to be more likely candidates.
