Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says he rates Alexis Mac Allister above a whole host of other Premier League midfielders.

When taking part in a ‘Winner Stays On’ game on Goal‘s TikTok channel, Gerrard favoured the Argentinian international when asked to compare him with the likes of Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Chelsea pair Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, as well as Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Even after Mac Allister’s teammate Ryan Gravenberch was posited as a potential alternative, Gerrard kept faith with Mac Allister.

Mac Allister cost just £35m when he was signed from Brighton before the start of the 2023/24 season; the same summer that Chelsea splashed out £115m on Caicedo.

When Rodri’s name came up, Gerrard decided to choose the Spanish international, rather than Mac Allister.

That won’t come as a surprise, considering the Manchester City player’s reputation, especially after winning the Ballon d’Or for his performances last year.

Mac Allister has had a slow start to the season at Liverpool

Fitness problems have meant that the 26-year-old has not played a full 90 minutes for the Reds so far this campaignn. He also suffered an injury scare against Burnley at the weekend when he picked up a knock to his ankle and head coach Arne Slot decided to take him off at halftime.

However, Mac Allister was pictured back in training on Tuesday, and he is expected to be in the matchday squad when the Merseysiders take on Atletico Madrid in their first Champions League group fixture at Anfield.
