Liverpool head coach Arne Slot says there are still areas where the Reds can improve despite being just one win away from the Premier League title.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Slot suggested that his team can still do better from set-pieces and he claims it’s an aspect that Arsenal have got right due to the amount of time manager Mikel Arteta has spent in the job:
“The work that we put in is that we’ve trained a lot, we’ve had a lot of meetings about it, we try every single time to improve the details and I think it’s normal for a coaching staff that’s only for nine or 10 months with that team that it doesn’t come from the first week.”
“I always say that if I am analysing an opponent, if they have their set-pieces perfect I know the manager is already there for a long time because normally you start with bringing the ball out from the back and how to defend and all these kind of things, and the end of that process is set-pieces.”
“And I think Arsenal are a great example of that, where Mikel [Arteta] has worked so long and they are so good in all different phases of the game and now they have become world-class at set-pieces.”
Liverpool have not scored many from set-pieces this season
Slot is right to point towards corners and free-kicks as an area where the Reds have work to do. They have only scored 6 set-piece goals in the Premier League, which is the joint third-worst record in the division.
In contrast, the Gunners have the joint-second best, having scored 13 over the course of the campaign. Aston Villa and Crystal Palace have the highest (14).
Slot’s elite mentality
Most would be satisfied with being the league’s top scorers, having found the back of the net 75 times in 33 matches, but Slot is clearly looking at ways for his team to score even more.
It demonstrates that the Dutchman is not resting on his laurels, and he will be looking to ensure that the Reds are even more effective in the final third when it comes to defending the title.
Of course, no two seasons are the same. Liverpool’s attack may look a lot different at the start of next season, with the futures of Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz all uncertain.
That means they may need other avenues for scoring anyway, and set-pieces are definitely an area where the Merseysiders can make big gains.
