Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva contrasted the silverware won by Liverpool and Arsenal when asked about the differences in the rivalry that the Premier League champions have with both teams.
Silva was speaking directly after the Gunners secured a 2-2 draw at the Etihad on Sunday when he suggested that the Reds had been more successful (in terms of trophies) and more ambitious (with regards to their playing style):
“The difference? I don’t know. Maybe that Liverpool have already won the Premier League, Arsenal haven’t. That Liverpool have won the Champions League, Arsenal haven’t.”
“Liverpool always faced us face to face to try to win the games, so from this perspective the games against Arsenal haven’t been like the ones we had and have against Liverpool. So yes, maybe a different rivalry.”
Liverpool always went toe to toe against their rivals
Jurgen Klopp was never a manager to shut up shop, with the German preferring to fight fire with fire in his encounters with Manchester City,
It didn’t always work out, with the Reds having been on the receiving end of a couple of hidings, but the fact that Klopp still has a winning record against Pep Guardiola in his career (12 wins to Guardiola’s 11) shows that his approach has been very successful.
We shall have to wait and see whether his successor Arne Slot will take the same approach when his team face City at the start of December.
What is the state of play at the top of the Premier League?
City’s stalemate against Arsenal means that Liverpool are just one point behind top spot after 5 games. Slot’s men are level on points with Aston Villa. Arsenal are a point further behind.
Next up for the Merseyside club in the Premier League is an away trip to Wolves on Saturday evening.
