Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes Liverpool should “really” be “fancying” their chances of winning the Premier League this season.
Manchester City’s 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham on Saturday evening has given the Reds the chance to open up a big lead. Speaking on his podcast, Neville said fellow rivals Arsenal are under “pressure” to take advantage, having failed to win the title in the last two seasons, but it is the Merseysiders who currently have the edge, both in terms of points and the options available to manager Arne Slot:
“[Challengers] must be thinking ‘hang on a minute – there’re no excuses here now I’m looking more at Arsenal with that statement than Liverpool because I think anyone would have said at the start of the season that Arne Slot would have come in and done what he’s done, I’d have said ‘no, I’m not quite sure that’s going to happen’.”
“This was Arsenal’s season if it wasn’t going to be City’s. So I think the pressure is really on Arsenal now to step up and go for it. They had a good start there with the 3-0 [against Nottingham Forest].”
“But for Liverpool, sat there at the top of the league, with that back five that they’ve got, and those front players and the options that they have, they must be really fancying it now.”
It’s a massive game at Anfield next weekend
City boss Pep Guardiola has already stated that he believes the reigning champions will be out of the title race if they lose against Liverpool.
The match next Sunday could prove to be a defining moment in the season if the Reds beat their perennial rivals at home.
Liverpool have to face Real Madrid first
While plenty of fans will be keenly anticipating the game against City, Slot’s side have the small matter of playing the current European champions midweek.
If they can beat Real, though, it would be a massive morale boost heading into their top-of-the-table clash versus Pep Guardiola’s team.
