Liverpool Star’s “Stupid” Decision Could Now Cost Him £400,000

Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike could be fined two weeks’ wages for his sending off against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, according to reports.

The Daily Mail reporter Dominic King is usually very reliable when it comes to the Reds, and he says it is likely that the Frenchman will have his salary docked for his transgression.

Ektike was already on a booking for dissent before he celebrated his winner by taking off his shirt and showing the name on the back of his shirt to the crowd.

The 23-year-old was then given a second yellow card by referee Thomas Bramall, and he will now be banned for the Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace this weekend as a consequence.

Ekitike could lose a six-figure sum

Capology reports that the forward signed a £200,000 a week, six-year contract when he joined from Eintracht Frankfurt during the summer transfer window.

It means that if Liverpool do go ahead and fine Ekitike, he would stand to lose £400,000 – an eyewatering sum for such an ill-judged decision.

Slot was clearly unhappy with the Liverpool forward’s actions

When asked in his post-match press conference on Tuesday night about Ekitike’s “needless” red card, head coach Arne Slot did not pull any punches with his answer:

“That was ‘needless’, yes. And it was ‘stupid’. Yeah, it was. The first one was already needless and to a certain extent stupid, because you have to control your emotions…”

“If you score in a Champions League final in the 87th minute after outplaying three players and hitting it in the top corner, I can maybe understand that you’re like, ‘This is all about me, what did I do?’ But I am old-fashioned, I’m 47 and old maybe.”

“I haven’t played at this level but I did score a few goals and if I would have scored a goal like this, I would have turned around and walked up to, in this situation, Federico Chiesa and said, ‘This goal is all about you, this is not about me.’ So, yeah, needless, not smart. You call it stupid. I call it stupid, by the way, as well.”

Etikike’s loss will be Alexander Isak‘s gain. The club’s record signing has yet to start in the Premier League since his move from Newcastle at the start of this month, but he is expected to be named in the first eleven against Palace.
