Ex-Liverpool defender James McAteer claims his former club have the team to be “genuine treble contenders” next season.
Once they complete the signing of Hugo Ekitike, the club’s spending will reach £250m for the summer, and McAteer has told William Hill Vegas that head coach Arne Slot has the depth in his squad to challenge on multiple fronts:
“If Liverpool were to win back-to-back Premier League titles, it would be phenomenal. They don’t need to win the Champions League to call it a great season, but to be a truly legendary team, you must win both competitions or even complete the Treble, like Manchester United in 1998-99. Liverpool have been in contention in recent years, going deep in four competitions.”
“The signings that Liverpool have made this summer mean they now have a squad capable of going all the way. The likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike mean they have a team and a squad set up not just to compete, but to win the Champions League and the Premier League. The quality is undoubtedly there, and so is the experience.”
“When you have players like Mohamed Salah still delivering 30 plus goals a season, a world-class centre-half like Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson in goal, who keeps clean sheets for fun, there is absolutely no reason why Liverpool cannot be genuine Treble contenders. There is a reason why Trebles are not won often – Manchester City did it recently, but we all know pressure builds and fatigue, injuries, and the mental toll all mount up. But they are prepared for that – Arne Slot’s squad has the ingredients to do something legendary.”
What are the odds of Liverpool winning the treble?
The bookmakers have priced the Reds at between 33/1 and 40/1 to win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League next campaign.
Considering how rare it is to win three major trophies in one season, those are pretty short odds, so there are definitely plenty of punters out there who feel the Merseysiders have a good chance of doing it.
‘Winning’ the transfer window doesn’t always lead to success
As the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal have found out to their cost in the past, spending heavily on new signings doesn’t mean you are guaranteed to win trophies.
It should not be forgotten that Liverpool lifted the Premier League title last campaign after spending just £12m on one player.
We will probably only find out whether this summer’s spending spree has been a success next May.
