Sir Kenny Dalglish believes Liverpool must not “underestimate” Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title.
The Reds legend says Arne Slot’s team have put themselves in an enviable position at the top of the table and it is up to them to ensure they don’t give any encouragement to their rivals as we begin the second half of the season:
“Arsenal had a few injuries as well. I wouldn’t underestimate them. I don’t think Liverpool would ever underestimate them. They’ve got great respect for them. What they’ve achieved there…”
“They [Liverpool] will make the rest of the clubs very jealous because they’d much rather have the success they had. At the end of the day, you’ve got to do what you have to do. You have to play whoever is in front of you and get as many points and results as you can.”
Liverpool have to show they are strong frontrunners
While it is always good to have a comfortable lead at this stage of the campaign, a lot can still happen between now and May.
As Arsenal showed when they blew an eight-point lead a couple of years ago, you only need a few slip-ups for rivals to catch you. Slot’s side need to demonstrate that they can cope with leading from the front.
A 9-point gap could be just 3 when the Reds next kickoff
With the Gunners playing twice in between Liverpool’s fixtures versus West Ham and Manchester United, it will allow them to put some pressure on the Reds this weekend.
If they follow up their victory over Brentford midweek with another against Brighton on Saturday evening, the gap at the top will be pretty small come Sunday when Liverpool next play at Anfield. It will be up to the players to ensure it doesn’t affect them.
