Mo Salah is “now close to remaining a Liverpool player for another season” according to AS.
The Spanish publication claims that the Reds could even make an “official” announcement about a contract extension before the end of December.
Up until very recently, the two sides had been pretty far apart with regards to the terms of the new deal.
However, AS have said the “absolute pessimism” that surrounded talks has now transformed into “total optimism”, suggesting it would be a surprise if Salah doesn’t sign on the dotted line.
What has changed in Salah’s negotiations with Liverpool?
It is believed that Liverpool’s initial offer to Salah was far from the expectations of the player and his agent, but the Reds have seemingly decided to table a much more attractive proposal.
Undoubtedly, the Egyptian international’s performances this campaign (16 goals and 13 assists in 23 appearances) would have persuaded the club to make a more concerted effort to keep him.
What is the situation with Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk?
A few weeks ago, it was suggested that captain Virgil van Dijk was close to signing an extension, but things have subsequently gone quiet on that front.
Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, has recently spoken out to say that he will keep his discussions with the club private. European champions Real Madrid are known to be interested in signing the right-back but it does still look like the player’s first choice is to remain at Anfield.
It’s hard to say with any certainty at the moment whether the 26-year-old, who came through the club’s academy before making his professional debut, is prepared to leave if the club don’t match the personal terms he is demanding. We will likely find out more over the coming weeks and months.
