Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has won the Football Writers Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award for the third time.
The Egyptian international collected more than 90% of the vote, which is the highest percentage of any player in the 21st century.
Salah beat Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk to the accolade, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak in third place and Arsenal’s Declan Rice in fourth.
The Reds winger was last handed the honour for his exploits during the 2021/22 season, having first won it in his debut campaign in 2017/18.
Salah has matched a record set by Henry
Only one other player has managed to win the FWA Footballer of the Year three times; that was Gunners icon Thierry Henry who was given the prize in 2002/03, 2003/04 and 2005/06.
It is a phenomenal individual achievement, considering some of the names (such as Kevin De Bruyne, Paul Scholes and John Terry) who have never won the award.
The Liverpool forward’s season in numbers
Salah has found the back of the net 33 times in all competitions, while registering 23 assists. It means he is averaging a goal involvement every 0.82 matches.
In the Premier League alone, he has scored or created a goal for one of his teammates every 67.6 minutes. It means that the Egyptian is almost guaranteed to contribute every time he steps out onto the pitch.
When you consider that Salah will turn 33 next month too, that is quite some going. Whether he will be able to carry on in that vein next season is anyone’s guess.
After signing a new contract, keeping him at Anfield until 2027, fans will be able to enjoy watching him for at least another couple of years. He will be regarded as a Liverpool and Premier League legend when he finally hangs up his boots.
