Paul Scholes claims Liverpool (not Arsenal) may end up being Manchester City’s main challengers for the Premier League title this season.
Speaking after Arne Slot‘s side won 3-0 against his former club Manchester United on Sunday evening, Scholes said he has already seen enough from the Reds to believe they are genuine contenders:
“There’s a real dominance about this Liverpool squad. They could really challenge for that title this year. Three games in.”
“Before a ball had been kicked I thought Arsenal might be there to give City a real go and possibly go on to win it. But after watching the first three games, I think Liverpool could go past Arsenal.”
It was a statement win from Liverpool
The xG (United – 1.36 and Liverpool – 1.73) shows that it wasn’t as one-sided as the scoreline suggests, but Slot’s team were deserved winners at Old Trafford.
You also have to remember that, in addition to the three goals that the away side did score, they had another ruled out for a marginal offside when it was still 0-0.
Many felt it would take Slot some time to settle in but the players seem to have taken his ideas on board very quickly.
The bookmakers still don’t believe the Reds will win the league
While Scholes already seems convinced about Liverpool’s title credentials, the bookies are not quite so sure. The shortest odds for the Merseyside club finishing top of the table are 4/1.
In contrast, City are evens to lift their fifth league title in a row while, despite drawing at home against Brighton at the weekend, Arsenal firmly remain second favourites at 2/1 with most bookmakers.
A lot can change over the course of the season and we are still at the very early stages of proceedings. Even so, Slot has made an excellent start to life at Anfield.
