John Barnes has likened Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch to Italy icon Andrea Pirlo.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the club legend said that Gravenberch’s ability means he is playing a more active role in attacks than many other holding midfield players:
“Playing Ryan Gravenberch as a number 6 is a bit like playing Pirlo in a number 6. A different type of player but more attacking, more comfortable on the ball rather than a hard-working, difficult, strong defensive midfield player.”
Gravenberch has undoubtedly had a very strong start to the season, although the comparisons to Pirlo are probably a bit premature.
Slot is getting the best out of the Dutchman
Gravenberch’s first season at Anfield wasn’t exactly a write-off but fans only really saw brief glimpses of what he is capable of. There was one notable performance against Toulouse in the Europa League group stages that really stood out but, other than that, he struggled to make an impact.
However, new head coach Arne Slot has handed the player extra responsibilities, playing him in a deeper role, and he has grabbed his chance with both hands.
Liverpool still need to strengthen the No.6 position
Despite Gravenberch’s excellent form, there are concerns about what could happen if the 22-year-old gets injured or suffers a dip in performances. The likeliest replacement is Wataru Endo, but Slot is not thought to be a big fan of the Japanese international.
With Stefan Bajcetic out on loan at Red Bull Salzburg, it would leave either Alexis Mac Allister or Curtis Jones to play the role. While both can be deployed there, it’s clear that their strengths lie further forward.
You would expect that the club have their eye on recruiting someone to compete with Gravenberch, and a move during the January transfer window can’t be ruled out.
