Ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright paid tribute to Trent Alexander-Arnold after the fullback played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 24-year-old captained the Reds in Virgil van Dijk’s absence, and he helped set up the first two goals in the 3-0 victory. After crossing the ball for Dominik Szoboszlai‘s opener, he then delivered a sumptuous forward pass to Mo Salah before Matty Cash put through his own net for the second. Wright said that Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold, in particular, were keen to exploit Villa’s high line and that paid dividends when the Reds doubled their lead:

“Well, he [Alexander-Arnold] did pull strings. When you look at this situation [before the second goal], it’s the kind of situation I am sure Liverpool would have seen, looking at Villa and looking at their high line and what they are going to do…”

“You could see the three Liverpool players, they are all ready in their blocks ready to go and, before you know it, Trent Alexander-Arnold having that much time, it’s space for players to run into.”

Alexander-Arnold’s quality on the ball shines through

If you are going to give Alexander-Arnold the space to deliver a forward pass, he will invariably find his man. Combined with Villa’s high defensive line, it was the perfect scenario for the Reds fullback to show off his quality.

It was a stark contrast to the week before when he struggled against Newcastle, making a mistake for the Magpies’ goal. His outstanding ability in possession does more than make up for any failings in other areas.

Liverpool will be hoping to make it 4 wins from 5 after the international break

While Alexander-Arnold and Reds will be disappointed that their momentum has been halted by the break for internationals, they will be looking to carry on from where they left off when they face Wolves next.

Gary O’Neil’s side have lost three of their first four fixtures, and Jurgen Klopp’s men will be favourites to get another win under their belt at Molineux later this month.
