Liverpool Could Win Race To Sign £43 Million Defender In The Summer

Serie A club Napoli are reportedly ‘worried’ that Liverpool could win the race to sign highly-rated young defender Perr Schuurs, according to a report from Tutto Mercato.

Schuurs, 23, currently plays for Torino in the top flight of Italian football. For him to leave the club, Il Vecchio Cuore Granata will require a fee of no less than £43 million. However, with the vast number of clubs interested in the play, a bidding war could be on the horizon.

Who else, besides Liverpool, are interested in a move for Perr Schuurs?

Schuurs is currently a player in high demand. As well as Napoli, clubs such as Manchester United, Crystal Palace, PSG, Newcastle United and Champions League runners-up Inter Milan have all been linked with a move for the player in the summer transfer window.

Due to this, Liverpool cannot afford to rest on their laurels if they are serious regarding their pursuit of the player – they need to act quickly and decisively.

What would Perr Schuurs add to the squad at Anfield?

Liverpool, just two or three seasons ago, looked incredibly solid at the back. Both Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip were in the form of their lives – nothing could get past them, especially with Alisson in the net and Fabinho protecting them from midfield.

Since then, however, the flower has wilted. Van Dijk has been comparatively poor in the last couple of season – his positioning is often wide of the mark and his pace is not what it used to be, either. Additionally, both Matip and Fabinho have found it difficult to recapture their title-winning form from the 2019/2020 Premier League season.

Due to this, a shakeup at the back is probably a necessity at this point if the Reds want to push on. They could do far worse than Schuurs – not only is he an international compatriot of Van Dijk, he is also a very powerful centre-back with impressive technical ability.

In many ways, he is the perfect defender to slot into Jurgen Klopp’s system. His pace allows him to play a high line and his passing allows him to pick out his teammates from deep positions.
