Liverpool Set To Back Away From 25.7M Transfer Due To Bundesliga Star’s Injury Struggles

Liverpool, Tottenham and Leicester are unlikely to make a bid for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Deniz Zakaria this summer, according to reports in the German media.

All three teams were said to be considering tabling an offer for the Swiss international, with his contract running down into its final year, but his form following a serious knee injury has led the teams to withdraw their interest.

Zakaria returned to action after a nine-month layoff in November but the 24-year-old did not impress for Gladbach as he struggled to recapture the performances he produced prior to his long absence.

Things haven’t improved for him at the European Championships with Switzerland, where he has been an unused substitute in the last two group matches against Italy and Turkey.

Gladbach were hoping to get €30m (£25.7m) for Zakaria despite his contract situation. Interest from the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United in recent months had suggested that there could have been a scramble to secure the midfielder’s signature, but it seems no one is now prepared to take a gamble on him.
