BBC Journalist Who Got Zubimendi Move Right Reveals Which Midfielder Is “High” On The List Of Liverpool Targets

Liverpool are very interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton next summer, according to BBC reporter Sami Mokbel.

The journalist was the man who broke the news that former Reds’ target Martin Zubimendi would be joining Arsenal all the way back in January, and speaking on the Born N’ Red Podcast about the Merseyside club’s future transfer plans, he said:

“I’m reliably informed that there is a big interest in Adam Wharton for next summer but we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out. Liverpool have had a very heavy summer of spending.”

“And I think what we do know next summer that it certainly won’t be as heavy as this summer, and they might have to be a bit more selective in terms of the number of players that they go for.”

“But if they are going for a number six, a central midfielder, a dictator of play, then as I understand it, Adam Wharton will be pretty high on those list of options for Liverpool.”

Wharton has plenty of suitors

Due to the England international’s budding reputation, Arne Slot’s side are by no means the only team keeping close tabs on the player.

Manchester United and Manchester City are both said to be watching Wharton‘s progress too, and it remains to be seen which clubs will step up their interest with a formal bid.

The Liverpool target could soon have a release clause

Writing in a column for the BBC a couple of weeks ago, Mokbel also revealed that Palace are trying to tie down Wharton to a new contract.

However, even if the 21-year-old does put pen to paper on an extension, a buyout fee in excess of £75m could be included. We shall see how this transfer story develops over the coming months.
