Liverpool do hold an interest in midfielder Adrien Rabiot, according to SportItalia reporter Alfredo Pedulla.
Writing on X, the journalist said that the Reds have been in contact with the former Juventus player:
“Liverpool – Rabiot: new contacts yesterday, still no agreement but there is interest.”
Rabiot is available on a free transfer after it was confirmed earlier this week that Juve have failed to agree a new contract with the midfielder.
The 29-year-old, who has been capped 48 times by France, has also been linked with the likes of AC Milan, Arsenal and Manchester United.
It would be an underwhelming signing
With the Reds having failed to sign a first-team player so far this summer, there is growing frustration among the fanbase about how the club are handling their transfer business.
After Leny Yoro joined Manchester United, people have begun to lose patience and the arrival of Rabiot will not placate anyone. As we saw with Thiago, the club will buy older players if the finances are right, but he isn’t someone who would greatly improve the squad.
Do Liverpool need a player like Rabiot?
Although the 29-year-old is capable of playing as a holding midfielder, he is most comfortable in a box-to-box role. Considering that manager Arne Slot already has the likes of Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch who play in similar positions, it would be a surprise if Rabiot was seriously being considered as a transfer target.
There is no disputing Rabiot’s quality. He played an instrumental role in helping France reach the World Cup final in 2022 but he doesn’t fit the profile that the Reds need. If they do sign a midfielder, you would think they’d go for a traditional No. 6.
