“A lot needs to happen” before Liverpool seal the signature of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.

Speaking early on Saturday, the trusted journalist said that the Swedish international is increasingly likely to end up at Anfield, but nothing is set in stone yet:

“I think it’s looking increasingly like [Isak’s destination is] Liverpool, but still a lot needs to happen for that to take place.”

“So you cannot rule out him staying at Newcastle, but even at St James’ Park, I think there’s a growing expectation now that a move to Liverpool could happen.”

Some have suggested that Isak’s move to Liverpool is done

Former Middlesbrough forward Jan Aage Fjortoft claims to have inside information on the player’s move to the Reds.

Writing on his X account, the Norwegian said that the “deal is done” with Arne Slot’s side expected to snap up Isak for around £130m over the coming days.

At the time of writing, this has not been corroborated by any other source, so it remains to be seen if Fjortoft is correct.

Woltemade’s Newcastle switch has paved the way for the transfer

The Magpies have confirmed Nick Woltemade’s club record transfer from Stuttgart. The expectation is that the German international has been recruited as Isak’s replacement.

There are some that say that Eddie Howe’s side will only sanction Isak‘s departure if they bring in TWO No.9s before the transfer window shuts on Monday evening.

However, the size of the fee paid for Woltemade would indicate that Newcastle are resigned to losing Isak, but as Ornstein points out, there are plenty of things that still need to fall into place for a deal to be finalised ahead of deadline day next week.
