The £9M Sell On Clause Twist That Could Have A Major Bearing On Isak’s Move To Liverpool – Opinion

Newcastle will owe Real Sociedad 10% of every euro above €70m if they sell Alexander Isak to Liverpool, according to reports.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who is very reliable when it comes to the Magpies, has confirmed the existence of the sell-on clause.

It means that Eddie Howe’s side will likely stick to their reported £150m valuation of Isak.

Doing some basic sums and looking at the current exchange rate between pounds and euros, Real Sociedad could be owed as much as £9m of the fee received for the Swedish striker.

At the moment, £150m is €173.34m and subtracting €70m from that figure, we get €103.34m, 10% of which gets us close to that £9m (€10.334m) total.

How much will Liverpool pay?

There are already reports indicating that talks between the clubs have begun but those claims have not been ratified by sources close to the two teams.

Respected journalists, including David Ornstein, have suggested that the Reds would table an opening offer of around £120m IF they get the signal from Newcastle that they are open to the deal.

Based on what we know now of the sell-on clause, it seems incredibly unlikely that such a proposal would be deemed acceptable.

Isak is pressing for a transfer

It appears the forward is doing all he can to ensure he gets his move to Anfield. He decided against going on Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia and he is currently maintaining his fitness by training alone in Spain.

He is believed to be using his former club Real Sociedad’s facilities to keep himself in shape. It does feel like this transfer story has got a long way to go before reaching a conclusion, but we will find out more over the coming days.
