Liverpool will make a decision on handing vice-captain Andy Robertson a new contract in the New Year, according to reports.
The 31-year-old’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and his future is currently shrouded in uncertainty.
However, Rousing the Kop claim that the Reds are in no rush to give Robertson an extension, despite the fact that the Scotland international can sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs at the start of January.
It is believed that any offer from the Merseysiders is conditional on his game time between now and May.
Robertson’s minutes so far this campaign
The fullback has only played 264 minutes in total across all competitions, with head coach Arne Slot having started him in only two fixtures.
Robertson started the first Champions League match against Atletico Madrid last month. The defender scored Liverpool’s opener – somewhat fortuitously – during the 3-2 win.
He was also in the starting lineup for the Carabao Cup third round tie versus Southampton a week later – captaining the team and playing the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 victory.
Kerkez is Liverpool’s no.1 left-back
Robertson will be under no illusions that he is now a backup option, with summer signing Milos Kerkez having supplanted him as first choice.
However, since arriving from Bournemouth for £40m, the Hungarian international has not really looked that impressive.
Kerkez is still only 21 years of age and he could learn a great deal from Robertson over the course of the season.
Even so, if his form doesn’t improve, Slot may consider re-establishing the Scotland captain as a regular starter. That scenario would drastically increase Robertson’s chances of extending his stay at Anfield beyond next summer. It is a situation to keep a close eye on.
