Liverpool are interested in signing RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, according to Calciomercato.com.
Arsenal and Chelsea both hold a longstanding interest in the Slovenian international but the Italian website has added the Reds’ name to the list of Premier League clubs who have “already lined up” to buy the player next year.
Sesko has been in great form at the start of this season, having scored 6 times and provided 3 assists in his first 8 appearances for Leipzig.
The 21-year-old has also been racking up the goals for his country, scoring 4 in his last 2 caps against Austria and Kazakhstan.
Sesko did have a release clause
Back in June, it was reported that both Arsenal and Chelsea were willing the pay the €65m (£55m) buyout fee in his contract. However, the forward ultimately decided to stay with Leipzig and sign a new five-year deal.
There is no new clause that Premier League teams could look to exploit in January or next summer, with Calciomercato claiming that Liverpool and other clubs may have to pay as much as €80m (£67m).
What does Liverpool’s interest say about Nunez’s future?
If the Merseyside club are keeping close tabs on Sesko, it does suggest that they considering potential replacements for Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan is now in his third season with the club and we have yet to see any signs that he can iron out the inconsistencies in his game which have plagued him since his arrival in England.
Nunez has started three of Liverpool’s last four matches, but he has just one goal to his name since the campaign began. If he can’t improve his goalscoring return between now and next June, there is a possibility that he will be let go by the Reds.
