REPORT: Liverpool In ‘Transfer Duel’ With United For £26M Rated World Cup Winner, First Bid Already ‘Rejected’

Liverpool are prepared to fight Manchester United for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard, according to Sport Bild.

The German publication claims there could be a “transfer duel” between the two Premier League rivals for the World Cup winner’s signature.

It is believed that Pavard has been on Jurgen Klopp’s list since the start of the summer, but they may have a battle on their hands to secure his services.

Sport Bild report that United have already entered formal negotiations to sign the 27-year-old, as they look to buy a replacement for Harry Maguire. Their opening bid was, however, “rejected” and it remains to be seen whether they will return with another offer.

Liverpool are in danger of repeating the same mistake they made with Caicedo

The Reds have been making some schoolboy errors in the summer transfer window. They have been snubbed by Moises Caicedo after tabling a club-record bid for the Brighton player.

There is a real possibility that the same thing could happen with Pavard. Other reports in Germany have suggested Pavard has verbally agreed a move to United so Liverpool may be wise to back off and move on to other targets.

Are other centre-back options being looked at?

The Merseyside club were keen on recruiting Levi Colwill from Chelsea but the player has subsequently signed a lengthy contract extension with the Blues.

Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio and Torino’s Perr Schurrs have been mentioned as alternatives but, so far this summer, genuine links with centre-halves have been few and far between, despite the club reportedly being in the market for one.

Considering the troubles the Reds have had with buying midfielders, it may simply be the case that they have put their plans to sign a defender on the back burner. It is questionable, though, whether that is a wise decision.
