RB Leipzig have “agreed to sell” Liverpool transfer target Castello Lukeba for below his €90m (£77m) buyout fee, according to reports in France.
The 22-year-old was said to be keen on leaving Leipzig this summer, having spent the last two years with the Bundesliga club.
However, the cost of the release clause would have put off most teams from making an offer for Lukeba.
Foot Mercato claim that the centre-back is now available for a “lower amount”, although they don’t specify his new asking price.
Lukeba is attracting interest from 3 clubs
In addition to the Reds, it is believed that Tottenham and Bayern Munich are hoping to snap up Lukeba.
The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the France international previously but it seems both of those teams are currently focused on other targets.
Liverpool are seeking cheaper alternatives
Even though Lukeba’s price tag has been lowered, he would still be more expensive than the Reds’ top option, Marc Guehi. The England international has less than a year left on his contract and the Merseysiders are hoping to sign him for around £30m.
If his club, Crystal Palace, end up demanding too much for the centre-back, the club are expected to explore the market for younger defenders, with the intention of bringing in a like-for-like replacement for Jarell Quansah.
The likes of Nantes’ Nathan Zeze, Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez and Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera have been looked at. However, reports in Italy have also mentioned Parma’s Giovanni Leoni as a possible contender.
While the Italian teenager only made the switch to the Serie A side last summer, he could be available for around €30m (£25m).
