Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes the Reds’ squad would be strengthened if they brought in a “left-footed centre-back”.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said that both Arsenal and Manchester City have made similar signings over the past twelve months and he thinks Arne Slot’s side could benefit by having that type of player:
“When I look at what [Manchester] City and Arsenal have got, there’s a certain player at both clubs who I think would be brilliant for Liverpool”
“Arsenal have just brought in Calafiori and Man City have got Nathan Ake and [Josko] Gvardiol. I think Liverpool could do with a left-footed centre-back who can play left-back. I think it would give you a nice balance.”
“The problem is Van Dijk plays on the left but I don’t think it would be the end of the world if he had to play on the right for some games.”
A replacement for van Dijk could be needed sooner rather than later
As Carragher mentions, a left-footed centre-half would compete with the club’s captain for a place in the starting eleven.
However, van Dijk’s contract at Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the season and there is currently no sign that the Dutchman will extend his stay at Anfield.
Asked about his future at the weekend, the defender said there had been “no changes” in his situation, which indicates that negotiations over his contract remain deadlocked.
Who could Liverpool target?
One of the Reds’ top options, Willian Pacho, has already moved from Eintracht Frankfurt to Paris Saint-Germain this summer so the Ecuadorian international is no longer under consideration.
His international teammate, Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie, is also a potential candidate, while the Merseysiders are big fans of Chelsea’s Levi Colwill too.
