Chelsea will be very tempted to make a move for Caoimhin Kelleher if Liverpool are prepared to sell him for between £30m and £40m, according to Mick Brown.
The former Premier League scout believes the Blues are targeting a new No.1 and Kelleher would be seen as a “good option”:
“For that price, I’d be more surprised if they didn’t make a move. I think he’s a good goalkeeper. He’ll be looking at the situation he’s in at Liverpool and his chances of becoming the number-one goalkeeper there, with the other options they’ve got. So if that pathway is blocked, I can see why he’d want to move.”
“I can also see why Chelsea are interested in him. They want to sign a new goalkeeper to help strengthen defensively. If Kelleher is available for £30-40million, I think they’ll be all over that looking to get it done. Not only is he a good option now, as he proved, but I think he can get better too.”
Kelleher has designs on being a number one
The Republic of Ireland international was said to be hopeful of getting a move away from Anfield last summer in order to get more game time.
Nottingham Forest did make an offer for Kelleher but the amount proposed was significantly below the keeper’s asking price. The 26-year-old ended up staying with the Reds.
Liverpool have already bought another keeper
Another factor that points towards Kelleher leaving at the end of the season is the impending arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.
The Merseysiders have paid £29m to secure the Georgian international’s services and he will come into challenge both Kelleher and Alisson Becker for the No.1 spot.
Mamardashvili is actually a couple of years younger than Kelleher so it is not hard to work out which keeper the club see as Alisson’s long-term replacement.
