Chelsea Linked With Shock Summer Swoop For Liverpool 1st Team Player After Contract Talks Stall

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz may be the subject of a bid from Chelsea at the end of the season, according to reports in the Colombian media.

The 28-year-old has failed to reach an agreement over a contract extension and radio station Antenna2 claim that the Reds’ Premier League rivals could take advantage of the situation.

Diaz will have two years remaining on his current deal this summer so the Merseysiders are not under pressure to offload him quite yet.

However, there could be a temptation to sell if the Colombian does not extend his stay at Anfield soon.

Why have talks between Diaz and Liverpool broken down?

The forward is one of the lowest-paid members of the first-team squad. Capology data suggests he is earning £55,000 a week, with most of his peers earning double or triple his current salary.

For example, his main competition for a spot on the left wing, Cody Gakpo, takes home £120,000 a week, while Federico Chiesa (who barely gets any game time in the league) is believed to be on £150,000.

Why are Chelsea targeting him?

The London club have issues on the left wing. Mykhailo Mudryk has been given a provisional ban for a failed drugs test and it is not known when the Ukrainian international will be available for selection again.

Enzo Maresca’s side have been linked with several wingers in recent weeks, including one of Liverpool’s targets: Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens.

There is a chance that the Reds would sanction Diaz’s sale if it gives them a clear run at Gittens. Some fans would, however, question the decision to replace a Premier League proven performer with a youngster who has yet to demonstrate whether he can cut it at the highest level.
