Liverpool are one of “several European giants” that have made enquiries about Dani Olmo, according to reports.
Due to registration problems, the Spaniard could potentially become a free agent in January just six months after joining Barcelona for £51m.
Barca have had several appeals rejected regarding extending Olmo’s registration until the end of the season and there is a real chance that he could be let go if a solution can’t be found over the next few days.
Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims that Liverpool, along with the other traditional ‘Big Six’ Premier League clubs (Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham) are monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation.
Olmo has received praise from a former Liverpool player
After starring in Spain’s 2-1 win over France at Euro 2024 in the summer, ex-Reds midfielder Steve McManaman was quick to single out Olmo for his performance:
“You wonder, prior to the Pedri injury whether he would’ve been on the pitch as much as he has been. He was excellent in the last game [against Germany], he was excellent again today.”
The midfielder wants to stay at Barcelona
Despite the interest from Liverpool and other teams across the continent, Mundo Deportivo report that Olmo is keen to remain with his current club.
The Spanish international signed a six-year contract when he moved from RB Leipzig in the summer and he would like to honour the agreement.
However, Barca’s financial situation may mean that outcome is not possible. La Liga have enforced significant restrictions on their spending and the failure of appeals in the courts mean that the club may have no other choice but to release Olmo. It is definitely something to keep a close eye on as we head into the January transfer window.
