Feyenoord defender David Hancko says he does not expect to join Liverpool this summer, despite having “spoken” to Arne Slot “a few times” since the end of the campaign.
The Slovakian international was signed by Slot two years ago, and he went on to make 93 appearances under the Dutchman but, speaking about whether he would follow his former head coach to Anfield, Hancko said:
“I have spoken to him a few times after the end of the season, but I don’t think they are looking for a player in my position, so I don’t think a transfer to Liverpool will happen. But I wish him the best of luck, he really is a fantastic coach.”
Hancko is a centre-back by trade so his remarks about the Reds not being in the market for someone in his position are quite significant.
Reports of Liverpool’s interest in Calafiori may be overblown
It has been claimed that the Merseysiders have made an enquiry for Bologna centre-half Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian is being pursued by several Premier League clubs (including Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham) but it seems like a transfer to Liverpool is unlikely.
Lille’s Leny Yoro is also known to be on the club’s radar but it is believed that, as the teenager is regarded as a generational talent, they would try to buy him regardless of whether they actually need reinforcements in the centre of defence.
Van Dijk could be set for a new contract
If Hancko’s remarks are accurate, it may indicate that captain Virgil van Dijk will have his current deal extended. At the moment, the 32-year-old will leave at the end of next season.
However, if the Netherlands international does commit his future to the Reds, the need for a replacement would be far less urgent.
