Liverpool are one of several teams keeping close tabs on the contract situation of Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, according to Bild reporter Christian Falk.
Speaking to his website CF Bayern Insider, Falk said that Bayern are struggling to tie down the France international to a new contract, and with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, the Reds are interested in snapping him up on a free transfer, along with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain:
“It is true that Liverpool are looking at Dayot Upamecano. Bayern have been trying to give Upamecano a new contract for months. I think it’s coming up to a year of talks…”
“If Liverpool can get a player like Dayot Upamecano for free, that’s pretty good business. That said, every top club in the world is looking at him; I heard that Real Madrid is very, very interested in him. Also, the player is understood to be on the list at Manchester United and PSG…”
“With Liverpool, we now have another big side ready to take part in the poker. That makes it very hard for Bayern Munich, as I heard that the Bundesliga champions don’t want to pay him the salary he’s looking for. That’s why things have gone a little bit quiet about his contract talks, which could be really dangerous for Bayern, as he’s very important for the defence.”
Liverpool could be swapping one France international for another
With Ibrahima Konate also currently set to move on a free this summer if he can’t agree a new deal with the Reds, there is a chance that his international teammate could replace him at Anfield.
At the moment, there is no suggestion that the Merseysiders are close to a breakthrough in talks with Konate, and there is a good chance that he will leave 5 years after his arrival from RB Leipzig.
2 centre-backs could arrive on free transfers
If an agreement with Upamecano is struck, he may not be the only high-profile centre-half joining on a free. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is also nearing the end of his contract.
The Reds failed to secure his services on Deadline Day earlier this month, but the defender is still expected to depart Selhurst Park in the near future.
