Ex-Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant claims his former club made a “massive mistake” when they failed to clinch the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.
Speaking exclusively to Walk On (courtesy of NewBettingSites.uk), Pennant claimed that the centre-back would have been the most important addition of the summer transfer window:
“I think it was a massive mistake. When it was rumoured that he was joining and signing, I actually said, out of all the signings that Liverpool made, you know, with Isak, with Wirtz, with Kerkez, I think this will probably be the best one, because we know what he can give you.”
“He is Premier League proven. We’ve seen it at Crystal Palace, he’s an England international, he’s good with the ball, he can dribble out, he can pass, he has everything that Liverpool probably needed.”
“You know, it’s like a second Virgil in essence, as, you know, that ball at the feet, if you try and close down Virgil, don’t worry, because we’ve got Guehi to come out and find that pass and split the defence midfield and whatnot. So yeah, it was a massive, massive hit, especially with Giovanni Leoni getting injured all season.”
Liverpool have been backed to revive their move for Guehi
When we asked whether the Reds should make another attempt to buy the 25-year-old early in the New Year, rather than wait until he can be signed on a free transfer, Pennant replied:
“With the injury that we had with the young centre back, Leoni, I think it would make sense going in January. You probably get a little bit of cut price, saying £30 million now, maybe, in this day and age, that’s nothing, so there you go, and it isn’t worth risking waiting till the end of the season and you’ve got teams like Madrid, Munich – all these big guns offering the contracts, and it’s 50/50.”
Guehi does have plenty of suitors
As Pennant rightly points out, the former Chelsea defender will be in high demand next year. In addition to the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, there is likely to be competition from other Premier League teams as well, including Manchester City and Manchester United.
With Ibrahima Konate casting more doubt on his future at the club, following his comments whilst on international duty, it may be wise to get ahead of the competition by recruiting Guehi now, and mitigating the potential loss of another centre-half.
