“My Understanding Is” – Romano Speaks Out Amid Claims That Liverpool And Arsenal Talked To La Liga Star’s Agent

The future of Liverpool target Ferland Mendy has yet to be decided, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

It has been reported in French newspaper L’Equipe that both the Reds and Arsenal have contacted the Real Madrid player’s representatives, while Manchester United, Manchester City and Newcastle are also keeping tabs on his situation. Writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano said that it isn’t certain the fullback will leave the Bernabeu:

“There have been stories involving Ferland Mendy possibly leaving Real Madrid that I thought I’d clarify. L’Equipe have linked Mendy with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, but my understanding is that his future is still open – he could be sold or he could even sign a contract extension.”

Mendy is closing in on the final year of his contract, and there have been constant rumours that Real Madrid are keen on signing Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich.

If the Canadian international does join the La Liga club, it would probably spell the end of Mendy’s time in Spain.

Would Liverpool be interested in the fullback?

It should be noted that Mendy will turn 29 in June, and that doesn’t fit the profile of player the Reds would usually sign. However, strengthening the left-hand side of defence is definitely something the club’s recruitment department will consider.

Andy Robertson is 30 years of age and he is unlikely to be offered a new contract when his current one expires at the end of the 2025/26 season. Kostas Tsimikas is not that much younger at 27.

A replacement for one of both players could be needed soon but Mendy is not expected to come under consideration. If they do table a bid for a left-back, it would probably be for someone like Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri. The Algerian is only 22 and he has a good deal of Premier League experience to call upon already.
