Liverpool have registered their interest in Gremio attacking midfielder Gabriel Mec, according to reports.
The 17-year-old is currently playing for Brazil at the Under 17 World Cup, and journalist Kaliel Dornele (via Anfield Watch) says his performances have impressed Reds scouts enough for the Merseysiders to make formal enquiries.
Mec has not started in any of his country’s four matches in the tournament so far, but he did score after coming off the bench during the 7-0 win over Honduras in the opening group game.
Since then, the teenager has been handed more minutes against Indonesia and Zambia in the other two group fixtures before being an unused substitute for the victory over Paraguay in the round of 32.
Mec was close to joining Chelsea
Last year, the Blues were locked in negotiations to sign the youngster from Gremio, but their last bid (reportedly worth around €24m) was knocked back.
It is not known whether the London club will consider reviving their interest or if other teams will compete for Mec’s signature if Liverpool do make a concerted effort to buy him in January or at the end of the season.
How much will the Liverpool target cost?
It is believed that Mec does have a €50m (£43m) release clause in his contract, but Arne Slot‘s side may not need that much to secure his services.
€20m (£17.7m) is thought to be the base asking price, but if we take into account the figures that Chelsea offered over a year ago, it seems add-ons will be required to make up the rest of the offer.
With Brazil having qualified for the last 16 of the Under-17 World Cup, Reds scouts will surely be maintaining a watching brief on Mec as his country continues to progress through the competition in Qatar.
