Liverpool have registered their interest in Gremio goalkeeper Gabriel Menegon, according to reports in the Brazilian media.
ESPN Brasil claim that the club “has received” inquiries from the Reds and Nottingham Forest for the 16-year-old.
Menegon is described as a “gem” in Gremio’s academy, and while they haven’t had a formal offer for the youngster yet, they are aware that he is being monitored by several teams in Europe.
The shot-stopper hasn’t made his debut at club level, but he has been given caps by Brazil’s Under 17s.
Menegon clearly has potential
The teenager was given his first start by Brazilian Under-17 head coach Dudu in a friendly against Costa Rica last month. He played the full 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet in a 4-0 win.
ESPN claim that Menegnon is already 6ft 5in (1.96m) tall, which explains why Liverpool see him as a good fit for the Premier League.
Of course, height is not the only factor when it comes to being a top keeper, but he is someone who could potentially play senior football sooner rather than later. He is expected to become part of Gremio’s first-team squad in the near future.
Are Liverpool looking for a long-term replacement for Alisson?
The Reds’ current number one is now 32 and he has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia on and off over the last year or so.
At the moment, there is no suggestion that Alisson will be leaving Anfield anytime soon but there is a succession plan in place. Giorgi Mamardashvili has been brought in from Valencia and he seems to be in line to become first choice.
Menegon is probably being looked as an option beyond the next few seasons. If he continues on his current trajectory and impresses in Gremio’s senior setup, a move could be explored in a future transfer window.
