‘Wasn’t Swayed By The Money’ – Report Claims Liverpool Bound Target Rejected Chelsea Earlier This Summer

Liverpool target Giorgi Mamardashvili did turn down a move to Chelsea this summer, according to Anfield Watch.

The Reds are reportedly in talks with Valencia to sign the Georgian international but he has been heavily linked with other Premier League clubs in recent months.

Chelsea were in the market for a new No.1, and the Blues eventually secured the services of Villarreal’s Filip Jorgensen.

However, Anfield Watch claim that Mamardashvili was also one of their targets but he “wasn’t swayed by the money” or the project that was proposed to him.

Why are Liverpool trying to sign a goalkeeper?

The Reds are looking to recruit a long-term replacement for Alisson Becker. While the Brazilian international is still only 31 years of age, the club are keen to have a succession plan in place.

Saudi Pro League clubs have been circling for quite some time and, if Alisson does decide to leave in a future transfer window, Mamardashvili will be waiting in the wings to put on the gloves.

What is the latest on Mamardashvili’s transfer to Anfield?

It looks as if Liverpool have already agreed personal terms with the 23-year-old, and he is happy to be loaned out for a year after making the switch to Merseyside. A move to Bournemouth has been discussed and the Cherries are said to be on board.

Everything now hinges on the Reds finding a compromise on the fee with Valencia. It is believed that Arne Slot’s side are hoping to do a deal closer to €30m (£25.6m), while Mamardashvili’s club want between €40m (£34.2m) and €45m (£38.5m).

You wouldn’t say that is an insurmountable gap to bridge but it does look like there is some way to go in negotiations before an agreement is reached.
