Report Names The 2 Serie A Centre-Backs That Liverpool Could Now Sign Instead Of Marc Guehi

Liverpool will consider targeting Juventus’s Gleison Bremer or Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni during the January transfer window, according to reports in Italy.

Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury has raised the prospect of the Reds re-entering the market in the New Year for a new centre-half.

Calciomercato.it claim that both Bremer and Bastoni are on the Merseyside club’s radar, along with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

However, unlike the England international, who could be available pretty cheaply due to his contract situation, the two Serie A centre-backs will command sizeable transfer fees.

Bremer and Bastoni are locked down for several years

The Juventus and Inter stars have just under 4 and 3 years left on their current deals, respectively, so their teams are under no pressure to sell.

Bremer is also reportedly attracting interest from other Premier League teams, including Chelsea and Manchester United, and Juve are said to be reluctant to let the Brazilian leave for less than €70m (£61m) to €80m (£70m).

Bastoni, meanwhile, is an integral member of Inter’s back three, despite being benched for the 2-1 win over Sassuolo last weekend. He is expected to cost a massive sum as well.

Will Liverpool sign cover for Leoni?

The Reds will have to make do with three recognised centre-halves until January. Wataru Endo will likely be asked to provide cover at the back in certain games, and Andy Robertson may have to be called upon as well.

A decision to buy cover could also be determined by the fitness of Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez. Both players tend to pick up injuries so, if either is sidelined for any length of time, there would be justification for pursuing the likes of Guehi, Bremer or Bastoni when the transfer window reopens in just over three months’ time.
