Liverpool Plot Transfer Swoop For 50 Cap International Who Admitted To Turning Down Klopp 5 Years Ago

Liverpool are tracking Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to reports in the German media.

The Bundesliga champions are targeting a move for West Ham captain Declan Rice, who would likely replace the German international in the starting lineup.

Hasan Salihamidzic’s departure is also believed to be a factor. The sporting director was one of the player’s biggest supporters and his exit from the club raises doubts about Goreztka’s long-term future.

With his place in Bayern’s team no longer guaranteed, the 28-year-old could depart the Allianz Arena if a good enough offer arrives during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have tried to sign Goretzka before

The midfielder, who has been capped 50 times by his country, was a target for the Reds before he joined Bayern Munich five years ago.

Back in 2020, Goretzka confirmed that he did turn down an approach from manager Jurgen Klopp before moving from Schalke to Bayern:

“Liverpool were a consideration of course. They’re a great club and their development since Kloppo came has been amazing. We’re all a little proud of him winning the title, but I was 100 per cent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.”

Goretzka is certainly very talented and Liverpool are on the lookout for players in his position, but you do wonder whether he would be the right fit for the Merseyside club’s midfield.

While the German is a goal threat and can provide a good number of assists, the Reds are looking for young and energetic midfielders who can cover a lot of ground.

The type of players that Klopp’s side have been linked with recently, such as Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone and Nice’s Khephren Thuram, do fit the profile and you do feel that Goretzka’s opportunity to make the move to Anfield may have come and gone.
