Brentford striker Ivan Toney has admitted that he is a Liverpool fan in a recent interview.

The 27-year-old scored 20 league goals for the Bees last season but, when asked about his future on the Diary of a CEO podcast, the forward made it clear where his allegiances lie:

“I have been a Liverpool fan my whole life, but I have liked Arsenal, I like watching Arsenal and how they play and kind of how passionate the fans are. But, yeah, Liverpool fan, Liverpool boy at heart.”

Reds fans shouldn’t expect Toney to arrive at Anfield anytime soon, though. The forward is currently serving an eight-month ban for betting breaches and he will only be available for selection again in January.

Liverpool are not exactly short of options up front

In addition to the three players (Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Mo Salah) that started up front against Bournemouth at the weekend, manager Jurgen Klopp can also call upon the likes of Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Ben Doak.

It was interesting to see that Nunez played just four minutes on Saturday, though, which does raise a few questions about the Uruguayan international’s future. If he were to leave the Reds at some point then perhaps Toney could be considered.

Toney isn’t particularly young either

On top of the controversies surrounding his ban, there are also question marks about the England international’s age. He will turn 28 in March so he isn’t really the type of player that Liverpool would typically go after.

However, after manager Jurgen Klopp persuaded the Anfield hierarchy to sign a 30-year-old in Wataru Endo, it seems anything is possible.

The fact that Toney would clearly relish a move to Merseyside if he had a choice does make him a player that the Reds could realistically secure. With his contract expiring in 2025 as well, Brentford will have to make a decision on his future pretty soon.
