“They Like The Player” – Journalist Confirms Liverpool Could Make Approach For £34M Rated Dutchman

Liverpool are keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Speaking on Playback, Jacobs said the Reds are fans of the Netherlands international, although there is no guarantee that a bid will be lodged this summer:

“Frimpong could be a possibility as well, they like the player, but Leverkusen aren’t under any pressure to sell.”

That last comment from Jacobs about Frimpong‘s club not being under pressure to sell is somewhat odd. Various reports have said that the Dutchman has a €40m (£34m) buyout fee in his contract.

However, if that release clause has expired, you’d think that a move to Anfield would become a lot less likely.

A number of Premier League clubs are interested in Frimpong

Manchester City (who sold him to Celtic) are thought to be keen on re-signing the defender, although it is believed that the Premier League champions will only make a move if Kyle Walker leaves the Etihad.

Rivals Manchester United are also known to have a long-standing interest in Frimpong and there is a decent chance that the Red Devils will table a bid this summer if they sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The fullback has less than a year left on his contract at Old Trafford and he has been linked with a switch to West Ham.

Liverpool’s pursuit could have consequences for Alexander-Arnold

While there is an argument to say that Frimpong could be brought in as a right winger, considering his goal contributions for Leverkusen from wingback last season, the Reds tend to target more traditional wingers/forwards for wide areas.

If Frimpong was signed, the position he would be deployed in is likely to be right-back. With that being Trent Alexander-Arnold’s spot, it may suggest that the club’s vice-captain will move into midfield.
