Liverpool transfer target Jeremie Frimpong is “95% planning to leave Bayer Leverkusen” this summer, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
Speaking to Sky Germany (quotes translated by FootballTransfers.com), Plettenberg claimed that “concrete talks” have been held with interested parties, although he doesn’t mention specific clubs:
“According to our information, Jeremie Frimpong, the right-sided player, absolutely wants to leave the club, regardless of whether his release clause expires. The good thing for Leverkusen is they can still earn a lot of money from Frimpong. So far, no one has triggered the clause, but we can say and emphasise that really concrete talks are taking place with potential suitors. The player himself is 95% planning to leave Bayer Leverkusen. Even if the clause expires now, then maybe a transfer will be formally negotiated in August.”
As Plettenberg mentions, Frimpong does have a release clause in his contract and it is expected to expire soon. At the moment, he can be signed for a fee between €40m (£34m) and €45m (£38m) but that could soon go up.
Liverpool are interested in the wingback
Both journalist Ben Jacobs and German tabloid Bild have linked Arne Slot’s side with a move for the Netherlands international over the last few days.
However, Frimpong does have other suitors. Manchester City have held discussions with his agent, while rivals Manchester United have kept close tabs on the player over the past twelve months.
Frimpong is not a priority target
Despite the Reds’ apparent interest in the former Celtic player, the Merseyside club are currently prioritising other positions, including a centre-back, a holding midfielder and a winger.
Considering Frimpong is an attack-minded wingback, he could be considered a winger by some, but it is more likely that sporting director Richard Hughes would pursue an inverted forward if they do strengthen the frontline.
