TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand has admitted that he is disappointed Jeremie Frimpong joined Liverpool instead of his former club Manchester United.
The Reds formally announced the signing of the Netherlands international last week after triggering his €35m (£30m) release clause, but Ferdinand says he would have been an ideal addition for their North West rivals:
“Frimpong is going to Liverpool which will hurt me a little bit, I’ve got to be honest. I think he would fit the way that Ruben Amorim wants to play perfectly.”
You can understand where Ferdinand is coming from when you consider that United play with wingbacks, which is a position that Frimpong has played regularly in recent seasons for Leverkusen.
Will the defender be a success at Liverpool?
There is no doubt that Frimpong will need to adapt to a new system and style of play. There were times at Leverkusen where he was effectively playing as a right winger, receiving passes and driving at defences with his blistering pace.
However, with his new team, he is likely to play in a much deeper position, where he will be asked to get involved in build-up play. It remains to be seen if he is able to stand up to the rigours of being a right-back in the Premier League.
Frimpong is not the only fullback being targeted
Arne Slot’s side are expected to strengthen their options on the opposite flank over the coming days. Negotiations with Bournemouth for Milos Kerkez are said to be progressing well.
Ironically, the Hungarian international was also a target for United in the past before they opted to buy Patrick Dorgu instead.
Both Kerkez and Frimpong are very attack-minded so Liverpool fans will be keen to find out how these players fit into the club’s plans going forward.
