Hamann Urges Liverpool To Think Again After Slot Reportedly Holds Talks With Trent Replacement

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann does not believe Jeremie Frimpong would be a good replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Reports in the German media reported last month that head coach Arne Slot had held discussions with his fellow Dutchman about moving from Bayer Leverkusen to join him at Anfield. However, speaking to besteonlinecasinonederland, Hamann said:

“Jeremie Frimpong had a release clause of €40million last summer and I was surprised that nobody took it. I don’t think he is an out-and-out right-back because he plays on the right-hand side when there are three at the back.”

“He has a bit of protection there because he likes to go forward, his biggest strength is his pace and setting up and scoring goals. Because of that I don’t see him as the perfect fit at right-back. Liverpool already has Conor Bradley, they have a player there who has done really well. If Mohamed Salah stays then he will be hugging the touchline in his best position, so I can’t see Frimpong there at the moment.”

Frimpong’s release clause is active

It is believed that the wingback can still be signed for €40m, which would make him an attractive target. That price has also led to rumours that other teams, such as Manchester United and Manchester City, could also make a move for the player.

Frimpong does bring a lot to the table in terms of his production in the final third. He has 4 goals and 11 assists this season, which is one more goal contribution than Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool can’t replace Trent

Due to his unique skillset, the Reds would have a very hard time finding someone who could offer similar qualities to the club’s current vice captain.

For that reason, the recruitment department are unlikely to be seeking a like-for-like replacement, hence the links to Frimpong. However, Hamann is right to point out that the Netherlands international is not well suited to a back four.

If Frimpong is a target, you do have to wonder how he would fit into Slot’s starting lineup unless there is a change in system.
