Liverpool “would love” to sign Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet this month, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds are in a three-way battle with Chelsea and Bayern Munich for the defender’s signature, but speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that Rennes will only agree to let Jacquet go at the end of the season:
“Chelsea and Liverpool would love to do the business now, but Rennes insist to sell the player eventually now for the summer, not for January, so Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern [Munich] all in the conversations with Rennes and with [the] player’s camp.”
“So, let’s see what’s going to happen there. But, for sure, [it’s] is a big battle for one of the most talented defenders around Europe.”
Jacquet’s asking price is substantial
Romano has previously mentioned that Rennes are holding out for a fee between €65m (£56m) and €70m (£61m) for the 20-year-old.
That is a very high sum for someone as inexperienced as Jacquet, but it appears the Reds’ recruitment department and sporting director Richard Hughes see his potential and want to bring him to Anfield as soon as possible.
Will Liverpool sign anyone in January?
Head coach Arne Slot pretty much confirmed last week that the Merseyside club are unlikely to splash the cash before the transfer window closes on Monday evening. When asked last week if it would be a quiet end to the month, Slot replied:
“That is what I expect. But I always say when there is an opportunity in the market where we think we can strengthen the squad, this club will always try to do so. But at this moment,t I expect it to stay mainly the same.”
Kostas Tsimikas could potentially be recalled from his loan at Roma, but the Giallorossi need to find a replacement first. The Greek’s return would then pave the way for Andy Robertson to join Tottenham.
