Liverpool have entered the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David on a free transfer, according to the Corriere Dello Sport.
The Italian newspaper claims that the Reds and Arsenal have made recent “enquiries”, while Manchester United and Juventus have also registered their interest in the player.
David has been in excellent form this season, having scored 13 goals in 18 appearances for Lille. He has been particularly impressive in the Champions League.
The Canadian international scored Lille’s winner against Real Madrid, bagged a brace versus Atletico Madrid as well as scoring the opener during a 1-1 draw against Juve on Tuesday night.
Why is David available on a free?
The 24-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season. He has not completely ruled out signing a new deal with Lille but the general feeling is that he will part ways with the Ligue One side.
There was interest from several Premier League teams during the summer transfer window but agent fees are believed to have put off potential suitors. With no transfer fee required next summer, though, a deal will be much easier to negotiate.
Why are Liverpool interested in the striker?
Corriere Dello Sport speculate that the Merseysiders have lost patience with Darwin Nunez, with the Uruguayan not a good fit for Arne Slot’s style of play. He was on the bench for the 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen earlier this week despite being the only fit striker.
It should also be noted that the Reds have a longstanding interest in David, with the first transfer links being made even before he joined Lille in the summer of 2020.
Some believe he could well be the successor to Roberto Firmino, although his recent goal output suggests he may prove to be a lot more prolific than the Brazilian. It’s undoubtedly a transfer to keep an eye on.
