Liverpool target Jonathan Tah is hoping to join a Premier League club if he leaves Bayer Leverkusen next summer, according to Sport Bild.
The German magazine claims that the defender’s “biggest wish” is to make the move to England, and his dream could be realised at the end of the season.
Tah’s contract with Leverkusen expires next year and it is believed that, unless his current team succeed with their final offer to keep the player, he will become available as a free agent.
Sport Bild report that Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham are “among those interested” in the German international.
Would Tah be a replacement for van Dijk?
There is currently a massive cloud over the future of captain Virgil van Dijk. Like Tah, the Dutchman’s contract expires next June and there is no indication that he will sign an extension.
Van Dijk has hinted that he would like to remain at Anfield but the Reds have yet to formally offer the 33-year-old a new deal.
If Tah is being targeted as a potential replacement, it would go down like a lead balloon among the Liverpool fanbase. He is a decent player but he wouldn’t be able to fill the huge void left by van Dijk.
Liverpool may strengthen their defence in January
Tah is by no means the only centre-back who has been linked with a switch to Merseyside over the past few months.
After failing to land Leny Yoro, Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio, Tah’s teammate Piero Hincapie, Chelsea’s Levi Colwill and RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan were subsequently mentioned as potential options.
A move for Simakan is now ruled out after he joined Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, but the Reds’ recruitment department are still scouring the market for potential reinforcements in the middle of defence. You can’t rule out a bid during the January transfer window.
